PROVIDENCE, R.I. (June 25, 2008) U.S. Navy and Army Divers look on as the former Soviet submarine
Juliett 484 comes to surface for the first time since it sank in April
2007. U.S. Navy and Army Divers along with Federal, state, and local
authorities participate in a joint service operation to raise the sunken
former Soviet submarine at Collier Point Park. Mobile Diving and Salvage
Unit (MDSU) 2, U.S. Army Dive Company and a NAVSEA Support Unit prepare to
salvage the former Soviet submarine that sank at her mooring point in about
30 feet of water during a nor'easter, which struck Providence in April of
2007. This training exercise is part of the DoD's Innovative Readiness

Engineering Duty Diving and Salvage Officer Accessions
A) Who is eligible to become an Engineering Duty Officer Diver
- Engineering Duty Officers (1460/1440) who want the technical expertise of Diving and Salvage.
- Accessions from another community (e.g., 1140, 1110, 1120) that lateral transfer to the Engineering Duty Officer Community. For more

Engineering Duty Diving and Salvage Officer Training Overview
A) Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center (NDSTC)
Six Months of PCS or TDY at NDSTC, Coastal Systems Station, Panama City, Florida.
- Marine Engineer Diving Officer Course (MEDO), A-4N-0024
- 3 weeks Basic Diving Medicine and Physics
- 1 week pool week
- 3 months surface supplied diving training
- 2 weeks chamber training
- Navy Diver Salvage Course, A-4N-0026
- Computer-based Training via Navy Knowledge Online
- EDO Salvage Engineer Training
- 1 week Salvage Calculation Review (when applicable)
- 1 week Practical Salvage Training
- 1 week Program of Ship Salvage Engineering (POSSE) Training
**** This is where you will obtain the Qualification of
Basic Diving Officer (BDO) and Salvage Officer (SO)
B) Continuing Education and Experience
- Most Engineering Duty Officer Divers have a Mechanical
Engineering/ Naval Architect MS, but it is not mandatory or necessary.
- On-Site salvage training at all follow-on commands - Based
on budget restrictions and your workload.
- Advanced POSSE Training - Alameda, California or Washington DC 3-4 days.
- Mixed Gas and Saturation Diving, CEODD-MGS-010
computer-based training on NKO
C) Timing of Training
- Dive School can occur before or after EDO postgraduate
education and before or after EDO qualification tour.
- Advanced POSSE training must be completed prior to core salvage
related jobs.
- Follow-on salvage training to occur on a case-by-case
basis, depending on workload and availability.
